Professional Liability Insurance: Do You Have the Correct Coverage?
Professional liability insurance requirements for dental hygienists changed April 1, 2026.
Insurance obtained by a dental hygienist licensee must be in a form that is satisfactory to the college and apply to health services included in the practice of the licensee’s designated health profession that are provided by the licensee.
Reference: BCCOHP Bylaw 8.14 – Professional Liability Insurance (full bylaws PDF)
This means dental hygienists must carry professional liability insurance with full coverage specific to the profession of dental hygiene.
In other words, professional liability insurance obtained through a dentist employer (such as CDSPI) does not satisfy the professional liability insurance requirements for dental hygienists.
Dental hygiene-specific professional liability insurance is included with BCDHA/CDHA Active Membership.

Does your office celebrate Halloween?
With Halloween just around the corner, we're curious how dental hygienists across B.C. are getting into the spirit. Does your team dress up, decorate or keep things business as usual?
What oral health-care issue would you like B.C.'s provincial government to prioritize?
Thank you to everyone who participated in last week's question! Members shared a range of perspectives on oral health-care priorities, including access to care, prevention, affordability and publicly funded dental services. The word cloud below highlights some of the themes raised in their responses. We appreciate your feedback and will keep these perspectives in mind as we continue advocating for dental hygienists and improved oral health care in British Columbia.
