SUMMARY:Introducing PerioMonitor: Integrating Oral Neutrophil Monitoring In Your Practice
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by Oral Science\nAt any given time\, diseases of oral inflammation effect 75% of people and only the most severe stages are typically symptomatic. Like elevated blood pressure\, oral inflammation is a silent disease that has great effects on health\, yet is greatly underdiagnosed or even undiagnosed\, contributing to oral and systemic negative repercussions. \nRapid point of care oral neutrophil testing and monitoring provides a user friendly and cost-efficient method for detecting oral inflammation. This testing method will enhance screening\, diagnostics\, monitoring and most importantly\, treatment planning and acceptance. \nFrom this course\, the learner will be able to: \n\nDescribe the importance of oral inflammation and evaluate the pros and cons of our current diagnostic tools.\nDescribe oral neutrophils and identify why they are a strong adjunctive tool to monitor any source of oral inflammation.\nDiscuss the criteria for oral screening tools and correlate the features of point-of-care oral neutrophil testing to the necessary criteria of a successful assessment tool.\nDiscuss the mechanism of action\, administration and interpretation of oral neutrophil testing.\nDemonstrate how oral neutrophil testing can be used to enhance screening\, monitoring\, treatment planning and increase treatment plan acceptance.\nExplore case studies using oral neutrophil testing to assist with diagnosis of oral inflammation\, highlighting how testing positively impacts treatment outcomes.\n\nPRESENTER\nMartha Szczepulski is a passionate dental hygienist that has also established herself as a distinguished educator and speaker in the field. SUMMARY:Transition to Palliative Dental Hygiene Oral Care
DESCRIPTION:Palliative Dental Hygiene Oral Care is the concept of providing compassion\, support\, and care for persons’ oral health as they progress through their chronic illness and disability so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible until the end-of-life. There comes a point when for the sake of oral cleanliness and comfort for the person – palliative dental hygiene oral care is the rational choice. \nTransition to Palliative Dental Hygiene Oral Care Objectives:\n1.Understand challenges of providing oral care as persons’ frailties progress.\n2.Recognize the signs of aging\, frailty and oral complications manifested in the mouth\n3.Demonstrate oral physiotherapy tools\n4.Acknowledge the need for inter professional collaboration among all caregivers to provide palliative dental hygiene oral care \nSpeakers \n\nLynda McKeown RDH\nHeather Woodbeck RN\nCarolyn Weiss RDH\nSue Raynak RDH\nRuth Bushby RDH\n\nRegistered nurse Heather and Lynda have collaborated for over a decade to improve oral care in long-term care homes (LTCHs). In 2010\, they initiated a quality improvement (QI) project at a local LTCH\, identifying significant deficits in Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) oral/dental assessments\, documentation\, and daily oral care practices. This work led to several presentations and a peer-reviewed article in the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene (CJDH).\nCarolyn had recently initiated her independent mobile dental hygiene practice. She was part of the Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association (ODHA) LTC advisory committee working on a white paper. Lynda was invited to join. Heather was brought on board as well. Although the white paper was ultimately shelved\, the collaboration established a writing group that provided vital support during the COVID-19 pandemic. With dental hygienists barred from LTCHs during this critical time\, the group maintained momentum through virtual meetings\, critiquing ideas\, and writing articles for Wound Care Canada. Notable pieces included “Bleeding Gums\, Wounded Gums: The Hidden Wound Epidemic in Our Midst” and “Xerostomia: It’s a Desert in There – Dry Mouth.”\nWhen editors Cindy Amyot and Jennifer Pieren invited Lynda to revise chapter 52\, “Palliative Care\,” in the Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice (6th edition)\, Heather and Carolyn were essential to the project. The team expanded to include:\n• Sue\, who pioneered the Confederation College (CC) LTC dental hygiene student placement program and at retirement f became an active Hospice Northwest volunteer and board member.\n• Ruth\, a late addition to the team brought expertise in community health education and education technology. Ruth also supported CC’s year 3 LTC student practicum at Pioneer Ridge.\nWith this diverse expertise and knowledge \, “Team 52” came together to successfully revise the chapter\, reflecting a shared commitment to improving oral care in LTC settings\, and implementing palliative dental hygiene oral care. \nB1-Psychology/sociology\nB2-Communication principles/behaviour management strategies\nC5-Dental materials\nD2-Periodontology-including assessment\, diagnosis\nD3-Non-surgical dental hygiene therapy-including instrumentation (hand and powered) and ergonomics\nD4-Care of special needs population\nD6-Primary prevention strategies-including oral self-care\nF2-Collaborative relationship\, referrals\, administration\, practice management \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Palliative Oral Care
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging\, collaborative webinar as we delve into the vital topic of palliative oral care. Palliative oral care is essential for anyone (at any age) who is dependent on others  or who face serious health-related suffering.  Due to frailty and life-limiting illnesses\, oral care for residents in long-term care (LTC) is paramount to help maintain dignity\, wellbeing and person-centered care throughout all stages of life. \nThroughout the COVID-19 pandemic\, nurses expressed feelings of burnout. This emphasized the urgent need for collaboration among all healthcare professionals to ensure adequate support for caregivers and accessible care for BC residents. \nDental hygienists (DHs) play a pivotal role in maintaining oral health and are dedicated to maintaining competence in supporting the evolving and diverse health needs of the public. Developing competence in delivering palliative dental hygiene care presents an opportunity to apply the full scope of dental hygiene practice by implementing noninvasive techniques and providing comprehensive support. \nIn LTC settings\, integrating DHs as collaborative partners alongside nurses is essential for providing client-centered palliative oral care care. This collaborative approach is fundamental to reducing the severity of oral health problems\, preventing pain\, and maintaining cleanliness and comfort to the end of life. Come join Lynda McKeown (RDH)\, Carolyn Weiss (RDH)\, and Heather WoodBeck (RN) to discuss palliative dental hygiene care for persons in LTC and understand how our residents can access the “right provider at the right time.” \nBushby RL\, McKeown LL\, Raynak SE\, Weiss CL\, Woodbeck HH\, Palliative dental hygiene oral care. Define and discuss palliative care and explain palliative dental hygiene oral care.\n2. Recognize the signs of frailty\, aging\, and oral complications manifested in the mouth during the process of dying and death.\n3. Understand and apply the dental hygiene process of care to persons who are palliative and/or at the end of life.\n4. SUMMARY:Webinar: Oral-Systemic Links: What Do We Tell Our Patients?
DESCRIPTION:Oral-Systemic Links: What do we tell our patients?? (1.0 hrs) \nResearch has been conducted for over 30 years on proposed relationships between periodontal disease and numerous systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease\, diabetes\, respiratory diseases etc. However\, the nature of these relationships has not always been clearly described or understood resulting in oral health professionals inadvertently giving their patients inaccurate information. As research continues to evolve\, having a clear understanding of the most current state of the evidence for these relationships can play a significant role in educating your patients.\nThere are currently 57 diseases being researched that are suspected of having some form of relationship with periodontal disease. This course will help you to relay accurate information to your patients about the nature of these linkages and how maintenance of periodontal health can have an influence on their overall health. \nCourse Objectives\n1. Discuss some common misconceptions about the nature of relationships between oral and systemic diseases.\n2. Describe the difference between “association” and “causation”.\n3. Discuss the current state of the evidence for proposed associations between periodontal disease and: cardiovascular diseases\, respiratory diseases\, adverse pregnancy outcomes\, diabetes\, rheumatoid arthritis\, cognitive decline\, inflammatory cancers\, and others.\n4. Discuss the most plausible explanation for these associations.\n5. Discuss how maintaining good periodontal health can have a positive influence on overall health.\n6. Develop educational strategies that will help to provide accurate information to your patients regarding oral-systemic relationships. \nSalme E Lavigne\, Dip.
