SUMMARY:Virtual Study Club — Unveiling Oral Health Heroes: Exploring Cultural Oral Habits and Combatting Oral Cancer
DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW\nOral disease is not limited to resource-poor regions; it is alarmingly prevalent even in affluent societies. Now\, more than ever\, the role of oral health providers is paramount due to global trends and the concerning rise in oral cancer rates. As guardians of oral wellness\, these professionals possess the power to detect pre-cancerous or cancerous mucosal changes\, potentially saving lives. They stand as beacons of hope in a world in desperate need of difference makers and heroes. \nCOURSE\nThis course aims to enhance the awareness of oral health professionals regarding cultural and social oral habits\, such as chewing tobacco\, ‘betel nut’\, ‘khat’\, and ‘coca leaf’ or ‘kola nut’ usage. Understanding these habits is crucial in comprehending their adverse effects on oral health\, overall human wellness\, and global health. Furthermore\, it sheds light on how geographically distant populations\, with their unique practices\, can significantly impact local dental practices as they migrate worldwide. This knowledge transfer is vital in promoting holistic health\, emphasizing the interconnectedness of oral habits with oral cancer\, disease prevention\, and overall well-being.\nEngagement and Objectives: Participants will be actively engaged through a visually compelling presentation showcasing globally researched cultural oral habits\, including unique insights from Vietnam. Interactive discussions will address the oral health crisis within dental practices and inspire the exploration of preventive solutions. \nOBJECTIVES\n\nArticulate the benefits of oral cancer awareness for both clients and providers.\nDemonstrate proficiency in detecting oral lesions during patient examinations.\nAnalyze the implications of increased awareness of unique cultural risk habits worldwide.\n4Develop a professional development plan to continuously integrate global oral cancer awareness into daily practice.\n\nPRESENTER\nSherry Priebe DHP\, BDSC\, MSc\, graduated with a Diploma of Dental Hygiene from the University of Alberta\, a Bachelor of Dental Science and Masters in Science degrees from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is published in the Vietnam Journal of Medicine and Pharmacy\, the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene\, the International Journal of Dental Hygiene\, Oral Hygiene\, and the Dental Health Journal in the UK. Sherry has been awarded for her cultural oral cancer study in Vietnam with the prestigious “World Dental Hygiene Award in Research” sponsored by the SUNSTAR Foundation for Oral Health Promotion in collaboration with the International Federation of Dental Hygienists and the International Journal of Dental Hygiene. She is a clinical dental hygienist\, researcher\, international keynote speaker\, educator and community oral health advocate. Sherry mentors and has led the University of British Columbia\, Canada/ Vietnam Dental Hygiene Service Learning Program for global collaboration. She presently serves on the BCCOHP Registration Committee and is instructor of the Dental Administrative Assistant Program at the Okanagan College in British Columbia. \nThe Virtual Study Club is a webinar-style presentation that provides essential skills and continuing education for dental hygienists in British Columbia. Registration for the full session includes additional reading resources\, discussion forums\, and other tools. Members can access to the courses on-demand to accommodate those who may not be able to attend the live events and can sign up on our Thinkific platform to access the additional materials. \nSIGN UP HERE

SUMMARY:The Microbial Balancing Act: Connecting Periodontal and Caries Pathogenesis with the Oral Microbiome
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to elevate your clinical practice and patient outcomes with probiotics? \nAlthough traditional methods of mechanical debridement for treating gingivitis and periodontal disease are considered the gold standard\, there are limitations that we face as clinicians in helping our patients achieve their oral health goals. This course explores the shared and distinct microbial mechanisms behind periodontal disease and dental caries\, emphasizing how dysbiosis drives both conditions. Participants will learn how probiotics\, particularly Lactobacillus reuteri strains DSM 17938 and ATCC PTA 5289\, may restore balance\, improve clinical outcomes\, and reduce systemic inflammation. \nJoin Kirsten Fisher BScDH. RDH on a journey of learning about the oral microbiome and how we can use host modulation therapies such as probiotics to enhance patient outcomes. Throughout the course\, you will learn the key properties of a good probiotic and how to implement probiotics into your clinical practice. We will be covering two different strains of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri)\, among the world’s most extensively studied probiotic bacteria. We will also review the clinical evidence supporting the use of L. reuteri in the treatment and prevention of periodontal disease and caries. \nREGISTER HERE \nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain how microbial dysbiosis contributes to local and systemic inflammation.\nBe able to identify the difference between a prebiotic\, probiotic and antibiotic\nIdentify what key pathogens play a role in oral diseases and systemic diseases\nIdentify the key properties behind a successful probiotic\nIdentify strategies to support a balanced oral microbiome.\nEvaluate the evidence for probiotic use (L. reuteri DSM 17938 & ATCC PTA 5289) in prevention and management of oral diseases.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nKirsten has been practicing dental hygiene for 14 years and has been immersed in the dental industry since the age of 15\, where she worked at her local dental office helping with administrative tasks and sterilization. She has always had a love for science and teeth! \nShe graduated from the University of Alberta with her BSc. in Dental Hygiene with Distinction. Her extensive experience spans both clinical practice and professional education\, where she is passionate about advancing oral health through innovative approaches. \nIn addition to her clinical work\, Kirsten works for BioGaia in the role of Manager of Medical Marketing and Clinical Education\, focusing on the role of probiotics in oral health. She is passionate about the oral microbiome and its connection not only to oral health but overall health. \nShe is also a member of the CDHA Professional Development Advisory Committee\, where she contributes to discussions on continuing education\, emerging dental research\, and advancements in the field of dental hygiene. Additionally\, she was a Swiss Dental Academy trainer for Guided Biofilm Therapy\, helping dental professionals integrate cutting-edge biofilm management techniques into their practice. \nWith her expertise in preventive care and evidence-based practice\, Kirsten is committed to educating fellow dental professionals on the latest techniques and research to enhance patient outcomes. \nREGISTER HERE\nCourse Outline \n1.
