Celebrating Nurses: Champions of Whole-Person Care

May 12, 2025

During Nursing Week 2025, the BC Dental Hygienists’ Association (BCDHA) is proud to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of nurses in providing services for the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and the prevention of illness and injury. As trusted frontline professionals, nurses deliver skilled, compassionate, and holistic support within a profession dedicated to social justice and equity.

BCDHA is honoured to work alongside Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of BC (NNPBC) and are grateful for their support and advocacy to ensure that current and evolving oral health needs for residents in long-term/complex care, and acute care settings are met.

As highlighted in the joint issues brief from BCDHA and the Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of BC (NNPBC) Joint-Statement-LTC-BCDHA-NNPBC.pdf strong inter-professional collaboration between nurses and dental hygienists leads to better health outcomes, fewer complications, and more responsive care for seniors.

BCDHA looks forward to continuing its work with NNPBC and the nursing professions in our shared vision to ensure whole-person care, including oral healthcare. Through the development of advanced preventative care models that honour the dignity, comfort and quality of life to those we serve, nurses and dental hygienists can work toward ensuring every British Columbian lives, eats, speaks and smiles without pain.

It is well established that healthcare teams that practice collaboratively enhance the delivery of person-centered care and improve patient and systems outcomes. We are delighted to be working with the nursing professions toward the development of an integrated, real-world care framework that ensures our clients, particularly residents in long-term care, receive the right care, at the right time, from the right professional.” (Leta Zaleski, Chair, BCDHA Board of Directors)

During Nursing Week and beyond, BCDHA extends deep gratitude to the nursing professions. Thank you for being advocates, dedicated caregivers, and essential partners in oral health.
