Serving on the BCDHA Board offers a unique opportunity to contribute your skills and experience to an organization you care about, while gaining valuable knowledge and expanding your professional network. It means serving the profession as part of the governing body responsible for leading, guiding, and overseeing the direction and activities of the Association.
The BCDHA Board uses Policy Governance® as the model for organizational governance. This model defines and guides appropriate relationships between the Association’s Owners/Members, the Board of Directors and the Executive Director. It also provides the basis for decision-making and lends itself to big-picture thinking in achieving the long-term objectives of the Association.
Serving on the Board comes with significant responsibilities. As a Board Director, you are expected to:
- Possess a dedication to service and the commitment to act in the best interest of the Association and the profession.
- Learn and understand board policies and procedures and commit to abiding by them.
- Play an active role in advancing the profession through innovative ideas and forward-thinking
- Accept the clear distinction between Board and Executive Director roles and responsibilities.
- Participate assertively in deliberation, while respecting the opinions of others.
- Commit to, and honour Board decisions once they are made.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise objective and sound judgement in carrying out Board business.
- Uphold standards for professional conduct and decorum while conducting Board business.
- Recognize and engage in leadership opportunities including participating in, or chairing Board committees (this involves additional time).
- Prepare for and attend four 2-day meetings per Additional Special Board meetings may be required between regularly scheduled meetings. (All Board meetings are currently held virtually).
- Commit to fulfilling a 3-year term of office.
