Evidence-Based Manual Toothbrushing Techniques
We are excited to share findings from a recent systematic review on manual toothbrushing techniques. This study provides interesting insights to help dental hygienists navigate evidence-based recommendations.
Key Findings
- Fones Technique: Moderate to high certainty that Fones likely reduces plaque in adults compared to no specific technique (assessed up to 28 weeks).
- Bass Technique: Low certainty evidence suggests that in adults Bass may reduce plaque in the short term but may not have a meaningful effect in the long term.
- Gingivitis Prevention: Low certainty that Bass may slightly increase gingivitis compared to Fones in adults long-term.
- Research gap: The review highlights a significant lack of high-quality research on manual toothbrushing techniques, especially for children.
