Meet Amanda Wagman

BCDHA Board of Director Elections (Northern B.C.)

I would like to acknowledge that I am writing to you from the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Ts’msyen, also known as Prince Rupert. I am an amateur jewelry maker, dog lover, aunt, constant learner, and a dental hygiene practitioner now working in public health. I would love to be your representative for the BCDHA Northern Director at Large.

I started out my dental career as a CDA prior to attending dental hygiene school. I practiced for a decade between B.C. and Alberta before completing my Bachelor of Dental Science at UBC. I’ve worked in pedodontics, periodontics, and general practice. I’ve always temped throughout my career and I believe it’s made me a well-rounded dental hygienist. Plus, the situations you come across can be great learning opportunities. I’ve spent time volunteering on the Downtown Eastside with the Aboriginal Health Society Dental Clinic and the Volunteer Veterinary Outreach + One Health Clinic. Oh, the things I’ve seen and the experiences I’ve had in my 15-year career! And I wouldn’t change a thing.

I was incredibly thankful to the BCDHA during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Return to Practice Guidelines and subsequent webinar proved to be valuable resources for me. I felt optimistic and secure to return to work, armed with the knowledge of best practices that would keep my clients, colleagues, and myself safe during that stressful time. I appreciated the work that went into the guidelines and webinar, and I knew then that I wanted to be a part of the BCDHA.

I also want to give back to our profession and be a strong advocate for moving our profession forward. I hope to contribute meaningful conversations around quality assurance and licensure. We have seen a lot of changes over the years, and it’s exciting to think of where we could be in the future. Even just thinking back to when paper charts and developing radiographs was the norm is a bit daunting!

I believe I would be a good representative for the north because I love collaboration, making new connections and friendships, and I am not afraid to speak up for what I believe in. I tend to be a calm, rational, and competent person, who exhibits critical thinking skills. We need a representative who can be our voice, and I would be honoured to be this for you. I am thankful for this opportunity and I hope to gain your vote.
